Fact: Capella University has many critics
Capella University and their supporters would have the world believe that only one individual is responsible for all criticisms of their "school." Nothing; however, could be further from the truth; here is one that is one of the earliest we can find (disturbingly, the instructor at Capella University with fake degrees she (Diane Stottlemyer) bought back back in 2001 is still working at Capella:
- "A time bomb waiting to explode at Capella" - This thread exposes the fact that Capella University instructor, Diane Stottlemyer bought and was using bogus degrees from a notorious diploma mill, Lacrosse "University." This thread was originally posted on degreeboard dot com (December 19, 2001) and, as of June 2008, not only does this it remain visible on the Internet but Diane Stottlemyer continues to be employed by Capella University. Included are remarks by one of the friends of former Capella Chancellor, Bruce Francis, John Bear (author of "Bears' Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning” (ISBN – 1580082025). View the thread here.
As the number and continually increasing amount of negative comments, criticisms, and outrage at the unethical practices regarding the reputation of Capella University seems to continuously grow, most of the complaints, comments, and other negative information about Capella University presented below were posted on the Internet over just the past year and a half (since early 2007). It is certainly possible to find a huge number of additional complaints, but these have not all been noted here as the most recent ones are, arguably the most relevant (one obvious exception is the case of Diane Stottlemyer, list above). Comments and Complaints on the Chronicle of Higher Education's Web Site
One doesn't need to look far to find a lot of complaints, comments, and reviews about Capella University. In fact, all that needs to be done is to examine some of the comments about Capella on the Chronicle of Higher Education's web site and online forums; here are a few examples:
- July 18, 2008 - "Before I read this thread [on the Chronicle of Higher Education's forums], I was neutral on FP's [for-profit universities] like Capella and Walden. Now, I have a healthy mistrust of their supporters. If your goal was erode the status of FP's and support NP's, you're doing a great job."
- July 14, 2008 - "The issue is not online education (I work for a university that has a large, successful, and good online program), but the for-profit nature of Walden and Capella. They are corporations for the benefit of stockholders, and nothing can change that short of their conversion to 501(c)3 status, which we'll see long after even the 32-year-olds among us are dead."
- June 4, 2008 - "Is there anyone that can give me any positive information about Capella University and Walden University. . . I am a community college professor interested in some feedback about these schools. Mostly everything I've heard has been negative."
- May 7, 2008 - "Capella University is not even in the league of non-elite schools. Capella U. is not even in any league -- except its own, semi-legitimate, where the name of the game is 100% acceptance rate while churning out pretend education with terribly lax standards and crowned with useless degrees -- in return for money."
- November 27, 2007 - "Higher education is so readily available these days, online and otherwise, and often so much more reasonably priced than UoP, Walden Capella, etc., that when I encounter one with a degree from a for-profit, it's a fait accompli in my mind that they did not do their homework when selecting an institution, they fell for some slickster's marketing pitch."
- September 12, 2007 - "Although I won't have the smiles I get from dealing [with all] of the egotistical "call me Dr." people. It's funny that the Capella PhD's are the most anal about it, while all of Ivy League faculty/co-worker friends are fine with first names."
- July 10, 2007 - "I completed my Ph.D. via Capella University. I worked extremely and my research was original. . . Here is the problem, it appears that colleges view the value of my degree as nothing. I interviewed at a college and was told that my mistake was going through Capella."
- January 5, 2007 - An article that appeared in the Chronicle of Higher Education entitled, "Employers Often Distrust Online Degrees" notes that, "Silvia Guzman, regional human-resources manager for ProTec Building Services, likens online degrees to diploma mills or institutions that advertise on career Web sites promising to help you earn a degree in a year. . .She mentioned several universities that raise red flags for her when she sees them on résumés, including Capella University, an accredited for-profit online institution . . ."
- July 4, 2006 - "As a department head, I have a faculty member working on their PhD from Capella - currently ABD. Being placebound, this appeared to be the easiest option geographically to accomplish the goal of the PhD. This person believes s/he is getting an excellent education (and paying for it handsomely), but all I see is a person who is able to generate reams of narrative to satisfy the requirements for a degree. I am concerned about his/her capacity to perform applied research in the future."
- July 4, 2006 - "I have to say, if being 'half-way through a Ph.D. program' at Capella yields writing and reasoning like Whitenortherr's, it's pretty clear why people don't take these degrees seriously. And people working full time and raising a family get doctorates all the time at bricks-and-mortar schools. . ."
- July 5, 2006 - "But to claim equivalency between a Capella doctorate and one from even a moderately respectable non-virtual school is simply self-delusion, even if your experience has been satisfying and your degree has gotten you what[,] you need [help?] professionally."

Complaints about Capella University on Epinons.com
Many of the following posts contain rather blistering reviews of Capella University:
- June 16, 2008 - "Not altogether satisfactory" -"The overall quality of the instruction and service were well below the level of what might be reasonably expected of an accredited university, and their sales practices struck me as questionable. Unless your job requires you to obtain a degree, AND your employer is paying for/reimbursing you for attending Capella, you would do better elsewhere, even if your previous academic record is weak, or your work/personal schedule is very rigid and demanding. Even if a degree’s only value to you lies in its fulfillment of a job requirement, it would not be difficult to find an equivalent-quality (or better) program at a more competitive cost.
. .If you do apply to Capella, look over their fees very carefully, and ask – via email or letter – whether there are ANY other fees than those listed on the fees page; keep a hard copy of their reply."
- May 3, 2008 - "I looked into Capella as an option for going on to graduate school. Right from the start I received bad service. This does not bode well for the school or their programs. I asked to speak with a student who was already in the program and I never heard back from them again."
- December 19, 2007 - "PhD from Capella equal to a medical degree from Wal-Mart"
- September 21, 2007 - "Greatly disappointed with Capella"
- August 21, 2007 - "Capella University - Disappointing upon further review"

Complaints about Capella University on the Student Doctor Network
- July 16, 2008 - "It was the determination of the board that Capella University did not demonstrate that it was substantially equivalent to a doctoral psychology program approved by the APA or listed by the ASPPB. Mr. Caye made a motion, seconded by Dr. Kores, to deny Dr. Gill’s request. The motion carried."
. . . "Yes, the lesson is that in TN (Tennessee), even if you bring your lawyer in... You'll still be denied. Maybe you don't consider the need to hire a lawyer just to get a shot at getting licensed part of an uphill battle. I do."
- July 9, 2008 - In a post entitled, "Walden and Capella?" a forum poster warns, "A search in the Clinical forum will bring up some good discussions about both of those schools. In short....run far far away from them."
- November 30, 2007 - "I am a little upset by something here. I emailed Capella asking if they could tell me the overall percentage of their PsyD graduates who obtain internship rates, since all I can find are the APPIC match rates. Since most universities seem to readily give up that information, I assumed they would actually tell me if i asked. Instead I got sort of dickish response."
- November 24, 2007 - "The thing that is really putting me off about Capella, at least right now, is the difficulty in getting information about the school from them. I can't get them to cough up graduation rates, retention rates, acceptance rates, or the number of students in the Psy.D program. Most places have that posted on their websites but Capella won't tell if you if you ask."
- November 8, 2007 - "Capella is not APA approved and has a very poor reputation in the psych community."

- July 2008 (?) - "I should have known to do my research before simply handing over my money. This school [Capella University] is too expensive and filled with inexperience staff and support individuals. A school should have a code of ethics and this school does not. It's mission is to get more people to spend more money."
- Undated - "If you are looking at walking away with an education, then go somewhere else, if you are only looking for a degree and don't require knowledge, then go to Capella"
- Undated - "The real problem I have with Capella is the Information Technology courses. Most of them are just plain terrible. It almost seems that they have someone who has no idea what he or she is talking about writing some of the assignments and discussion questions. In my Java class the instructor actually had to create three alternate assignments because the assignments specified in the curriculum were so poorly written even the instructor couldn't figure out what was required. Not only this, but the workload in this same class was outright oppressive. This has been a recurring theme at Capella—tons of busy work and very little theory or real instruction."
- Undated - "I transferred in 2 years of credits from another school so I already had a background and started off in the “harder” classes at Capella. I found the school to simply give you a lot of busy work to show that you logged on and discussed topics."

- July 11, 2008 - "I also have to echo the others, especially for higher education. I teach at a community college, and have been in on the hiring process, and I can tell you that anyone with degrees from Capella, Phoenix, etc, immediately go to the bottom of the resume pile."
- January 10, 2007 - "One of my former staff just asked me to write her a reference for a Masters degree admission to Capella University. While I looked at it and think the Counseling degree classes look thorough and wrote the recomendation of course, I did advise her to also look at other programs as well, from brick and mortor U's with recognizable names and respected degree programs."

- March 22, 2008 - "If you want to complete an [sic] masters or a Ph.D take my advice [is to] stay as far away from Capella as possible. They will bleed you dry and your degree will be worthless. Stick with a brick and mortar institution."

- March 12, 2008 - "You cannot get a respected degree from a place like Capella, DeVry, University of Phoenix etc. that were created to be primarily online and or quick degree programs for adults. For various reasons in the software and hardware engineering fields these degrees really aren't worth the paper they are printed on even though they are accredited institutions."
- March 11, 2008 - "Capella is a joke. It's a degree mill. Very simply put, you can't get a CompSci degree online from anywhere and have it taken seriously no matter what the degree mills may say."

- July 24, 2008 - "I just visited it and there are a lot of complaints. It seems that Capella doesn't mind violating a persons civil rights. Does anyone really want to be connected to an institution like this? Metaphorically speaking, when an institution is gasping for air to stay alive in the capitalist system they always seem to resort to underhanded tactics to get their last little bit of money owed to them before they go under. Thats why you need to look closely at their Customer Service Dept. and it's practices because it's a window in to see how they will deal with you in the future and also shows you what the leadership values are. No company in a growth mode would allow dissatisfaction with their consumers to fester like Capella. Whoever is in charge of Capella is not at all wise and doesn't care about their customers or employees. Very, very short sighted indeed. It's also a shame because the way that education is going is online. My advice is to seek out a more reputable, solid school. There are a lot of them out there, solid, reputable institutions that are creating new online programs all the time because they are responding to the public's need. Your time and money are worth more than to be subjected to shoddy business practices. Also, don't take to heart the positive reveiws from "Capella students". They are on a sinking ship. What else are they going to say?"
- July 23, 2008 - "I had a nightmare with Capella University. They kept telling me that my loan had not been approved yet. Three weeks later, they sent me a bill for almost $2,000.00 because I did not drop the course. I still have no clue what kind of nonsense is this."
- May 08, 2008 - "My gripe has to do with the initial contact I personally experienced at Capella University. Remember, I contacted them because I was interested in online learning. Capella did not fulfill a simple request that I had made to them. The request was to let me speak to someone who is currently in one of their graduate programs. I asked twice and they did not send someone like they told me they would. I have to start putting together my applications for graduate school by the end of the summer. I found Capella to be very unprofessional by the way they handled this request."
- March 9, 2008 - "as an educator in a public school district (K-12), I have a very hard time understanding how anyone could be willing to accept anything less than excellence from an institution [Capella University] that charges $50,000+ for an educational program."
- December 18, 2007 - "The constant negative controversy surrounding Capella and other institutions of this type is deserved. They are not really "non traditional" excellent institutions as much as they are advertising savvy businesses. They seek out and use four types of students: 1) students who are not very adept at finding good institutions, 2) students who doubt their own abilities, 3) student who cannot overcome the psychological barrier of being outside of perceived mainstream systems, and students who want a simple way out of the challenge of good competitive educational excellence. These people are great sitting ducks for trashy institutions like Capella that are really all about misuse of government loan funding. When Cappella's low rent degrees are exposed to hiring entities aware of good education practices, they do not hire these so called degreed graduates."
- October 13, 2007 - "One of the worst things about Capella is that it doesn't integrate technology into its courses. There are no Power Point slides, no telecourses, no video feeds or rental tapes, etc. In fact, all you can expect to do at Capella is read and write (in the traditional, visually unappealing, and very boring way). There is actually very little teaching going on, except for what you are teaching yourself through your own efforts (reading and writing). You can expect to learn more from your fellow classmates than any instructor teaching at Capella."
- September 21, 2007 - "I started with much enthusiasm at Capella. I did considerable research about on-line degrees. My wife, who has a PhD from Columbia cautioned against my undertaking the PhD program, but I pursued it anyway. I found it to be a disaster in the set up. I found the administrative organization and the focus on money obscuring the educational experience."
- June 22, 2007 - "Capella has many issues within it. There are plenty of problems that do not surface until you get past the PhD comps. Instructors have one set of information while learner support tells learners something else."

Complaints about Capella University on OnlineDegreeReviews.com
- April 7, 2008 - "Would not recommend"
- March 21, 2008 - "The biggest mistake I made was doing this online degree [at Capella]. I have never been so upset about the lack of professionalism with the place. I don't want to get into it now, but not only do they lie (especially in IDOL [Instruction Design in Online Education]), they expect you to be dishonest too. They are there for the handout of $$, you are worthless to them otherwise. Good luck trying to get a person on the phone who knows something. You only get through to a call center, and when on hold you are reminded to be sure you renew your FAFSA. Absolutely WORTHLESS.
RUN LIKE THE WIND!"
- December 13, 2007 - "Capella will ask you to take OM8004 during the first quarter you are admitted. That course is probably designed to pay for the commissions of the enrollment advisors as it charges a flat fee of over $4,000 per quarter. Give yourself a break by going to other schools that charges by credit hours. . . Since I started with Capella, I received little to no support from their "academic advisors", many of whom do no even have a Ph.D. themselves. Their job is to make sure you continue to enroll and pay the quarterly dues."
- October 22, 2007 - "Few of the instructors at Capella are great, and most of them are losers who cannot find a job anywhere else except doing online teaching at many other online schools. They don't even call themselves "professors", but course producers or classroom facilitators."
- September 23, 2007 - "Capella University is running a scam on PhD learners. After successfully completing all the required coursework and three residencies, the university will subjectively fail you in comps for no apparent reason. Be aware of this educational institution. Their reputation and credibility is severly damaged."
- August 22, 2007 - "I attended [Capella University] for several years and was not happy with the experience. The school is disorganized and while there are good instructors many of them are not available in the classroom. They do not compare well to many other schools in terms of curriculum and have failed to obtain APA status for good reason. They are all about the money and problems are met with abject frustration rather than productive solution. Their technology is good but their status is poor.
They accept everyone who can pay and of those only about half graduate. One has to ask why their attrition rat[e]s [are] so high and why they don't offer national facilities for the cost of the programs they offer. This reduces their credibility as well as their ability to serve students well."

Complaints about Capella on Online Degree Reviews
The following information was documented on July 23, 2008 and contains some of very nasty remarks about Capella University, Unfortunately, it is impossible to link to individual posts and the thread is very, very long. Just the same, the negative comments about Capella and others are so vile, and numerous, that they are now being featured here.
Because of the nature of the thread, all posts may be located by clicking here. We'll provide a few highlights (There are simply too many to post them all), along with the dates and names of the poster, for each specific posts below: unfortunately, you'll need to examine the tread to locate them. In order to demonstrate currency, these posts have been listed on this site in reverse chronological order - they do not appear that way on the original thread.
- June 13, 2008 - Jeff - "It is unfortunate that you were misled into thinking that Capella was the best option available for you. Currently there are hundreds of traditional State Supported schools that offer almost any degree that you could possibly want (often at a fraction of the price that you would pay at Cappela, Walden, UoP, NCU etc...) . . But why spend the money and time at a school like Capella, Walden, UoP, NCU, or the other clones when you could get your degree online at a school such as Kansas State, University of Texas, Penn State...Etc etc... Often for substantially less money (and commanding a far greater degree of respect)??? Going to Capella, Walden UoP Etc is simply illogical."
- April 24, 2008 - Crapella Student - "Crapella b da best school on da internets. 2 all dem playa h8rs... we b gettin da groove on while u b wasting time with dat learn'n and writing stuff. I b offurd da best jobs sellin dese rocks. Without Crapella I wuldnt hav time to be gettin dese connects and gettin high as da burds."
- April 5, 2008 - Nobody is questioning the Legitimacy of Distance E - "The legitimacy of for profit schools such as Capella, Walden and UOP is what most are saying is crap of which I do agree."
- March 26, 2008 - tic tac -"Read how Capella was denied by Arizona to offer an education degree where Capella's legal counsel tried to use the selling point... "Capella has been invited by NCATE to apply for approval" in response to Superintendent Horne who noted that "NCATE is extremely demanding and if a school is accredited by NCATE it is a good sign that we could accept those schools. The problem is that many schools don’t want to deal with it because it is so demanding." . . . Last third of document... http://www.ade.az.gov/stateboard/minutes/09-27-04.doc
The Arizona Board of Education saw through their lame education programs and did so because they weren't NCATE. Capella's legal counsel [Priscilla McNulty] used the tired adage... we have been invited to apply. We hear that so often from these diploma mills and this coming from the state that is home to the largest of them all... rather pathetic."
- March 25, 2008 - tic tac - "UOP, Capella... especially Walden are all inferior for-profit universities. There are quite a few non-profits on here that would make better choices. Not to mention they are way too overpriced for such an inferior product."
- March 21, 2008 - For Donasuan - " . . . Schools like UOP and Capella deliver a degree, the non-profits deliver a curriculum and a degree to be earned."
- March 16, 2008 - Lynn - "Capella took $2500 in Financial Aid for my Education, then went and Charged ME the same fee (yes, they wanted to be paid TWICE). When I Complained, they Dropped my courses and Refused to let me continue...What a SCAM OPERATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT GO TO THIS FAKE INSTITUTION!!"
- February 18, 2008 - Capella is a joke -"Anyone who is attending Capella for a MS, MBA, MA or PHD is just too plain lazy to do what is required get admitted to a selective program. This for profit schools are all the same and don't deserve to be accredited by any regional accrediting body."
- February 11, 2008 - mar mar - "Anyone can get in Capella. They only want your money. My husband was in the military and missed the drop out period by 48 hours. (Friday to Monday morning) They have refused to credit his $900."
- January 30, 2008 - Keep Wondering Just Wondering - "Got no problem with the Military providing an education, especially at the better online schools like UMUC and SUNY Empire State but Capella and UOP are crap and don't deserve federal aid."
- January 30, 2008 - Brick - "From what I understand people are not bashing online degrees, they are bashing the schools that are taking advantage of the sales volumes in student loans to pay their shareholders dividends on time. (Apollo Group). The motivation to profit off of students makes me sick to my stomach, schools like Capella and UOP should be ashamed. By the way I enjoy online classes, have no problem with them but the thought of a school such as Capella that is profitering from those who want to earn an education is sickening."
- January 30, 2008 - To Jennifer - ". . . Go to Capella, you belong with the least most selective college in the nation next to University of Phoenix."
- January 28, 2008 - 425665 - "Online education is fine but Capella charges way to [sic] much for what they provide. Capella provides a 4th rate educatin [sic] at a fist [sic] class price."
- January 18, 2008 - get real -."Capella, U.Phoenix, Walden...........all crap.
. .Try doing some real work and apply to schools that actually are selective instead of schools that waive every admissions standard just so they can get your loan money."
- December 22, 2007 - My experience with Capella - "Sorry to offend you, but I meant to say “…just because I an am not IMPRESSED with the School.” You can turn it any way you want, but I just wanted to share my personal experience with other people. I accept how you judge me as "dumber" because I should have done my homework and I wouldn't be in this situation. I would have thought twice before making such big decision. I wish I had visited this site before enrolling in the program. I would have learned from other people mistakes than my own, which costs me $$$ . . .Bottom line, Capella is just a joke, a waste of time, money, and energies. Since I have been in the program, my colleagues, supervisors, and friends have all expressed their concerns on my decision to attend school. Whenever someone surf online, an add pop ups say “ …at Capella, experience counts toward your credit…” they call come to ask me, “how many credits you got…”
- December 20, 2007 - My experience with Capella - "My personal experience with Capella is less than expected. I am thinking to call it quit from thier PhD program not that I am not getting good grades but just because I am not that expressed with the overall quality of education that I am getting. I wish I knew, so think twice before deciding so you don't find yourself in my situation.... just thought to share my little experience!!"
- October 21, 2007 - Attention - "If you go to Capella you are stupid and it is as simple as that. You have no business working, teaching or anything else. Just so I have made not mistakes, this includes ALL online schools like ITT, DeVry, UoP, Jones University, etc."
- October 18, 2007 - Being Honest - "Capella, UOP, ITT, and any other for profit university is sub par and so are the students. No one should take anyone with a degree from these institutions seriously. Students in these schools are the worst of the best and the best of the worst (and maybe they are neither, they may just be the worst of the worst). I question whether these students should even be allowed breed for fear that their below average genes may be allowed to create another sub par human with below average intellect whom will either turn out to be a derelict or a garbage man. I will not say I am sorry because I am not. These so-called students make me sick as an educated man and frankly they do not deserve jobs in academia and they do not deserve jobs in the professional business world either. Allowing these “students” into management will most certainly translate into a failed business and allowing them into academia will only further desecrate our educational system."
- October 17, 2007 - Lumpy - "Holy Cow!!! Someone actually recommended UoP instead of Capella??? I'm not saying Capella is great (They're not, They suck just like Walden, UoP and NCU and the other UoP clones) But UoP has the most money hungry greedy b@$T@rds for management the world has ever known.
If your [sic] going to recommend another school, you can definately do better than UoP!! Wise Up!!"
- October 14, 2007 - Just for fun - "I am getting a degree at Capella so I can teach there and become a part of the problem. I want to see how many I can push through the paper mill! and get paid to do it! mmmm... I wonder if there is a commission for the number of students you push through your class?"
- September 27, 2007 - What? - ". . . Capella is on par with ITT Technical Institute and Pheonix. They are in a league all their own. That league is one that everyone looks down upon."
- September 21, 2007 - Lino - "I started with much enthusiasm at Capella. I did considerable research about on-line degrees. My wife, who has a PhD from Columbia cautioned against my undertaking the PhD program, but I pursued it anyway. I found it to be a disaster in the set up. I found the administrative organization and the focus on money obscuring the educational experience. . . At work, the school was not recognized. I would strong urge people to avoid this school. Perhaps there are some on-line schools that are focused on education."
- September 18, 2007 - Mary - "I am presently a student at Capella taking my first class in the Human Services-Counseling MS degree program. To be honest, I wish I could figure out how to transfer to a brick & mortar college and still keep my student loan. I'm terribly disappointed. The vast majority of the other students in my classes are barely literate; how they got through a Bachelor's program and passed is anybody's guess! I thought I would be in a class with other educated, literate, articulate adults and that we might disagree but it would be done with some level of intelligence."
- August 31, 2007 - Careful - "Just an FYI for everyone attending Capella. Capella is not different from ITT or Pheonix. They are a business selling education. Their admissions people are sales people and willing to do whatever they can to get you in. They have open enrollment so there is no "admissions". Everyone gets in. I have heard of people who got in without a diploma from a high school or GED.
This open enrollment makes their degrees seen as the bottom feeders degrees. It is not taken serious in many industries and not respected at all in acadmia. They are expensive and the education you are recieving, may be good, but since your in class with the guy who still eats paste and is as smart as a rock, your degree is watered down.
Your better off at a community college or finding a public non-profit school that has online courses. Capella's bottom line is the almighty $$$, that means they don't care what happens to you as long as you pay. Seriously, don't take care of financial aid by the first class and see how long it takes before they lock you out until its taken care of."
- August 28, 2007 - Robert L. Johnson - ". . . I must agree Capella has a dishearting name in academics. It would be very very very very hard to get a job in acadmics with a FOR-PROFIT degree UNLESS its for another FOR-PROFIT school. The whole ZERO admissions criteria even for a phD?? Come on now. Your [sic] probably in class with people who can't make it anywhere else. A doctoral degree isn't one of the degrees that should be "in anyone's reach". In order to earn one, you should study and write tons of admissions essays to a real school. No wonder its laughed at in acadmia!"
- August 28, 2007- Stay Away - ". . . these schools are not respected and are a joke. Any school that is out for-profit is not in your best interest PERIOD. No admissions standards, no ethics, no sympothy [sic]. Find a local school and even a community college if you have to (if they off the MS). Bottom line, any school that is for-profit is for-bottom-line."
- August 14, 2007 - Just wondering - ". . .I look at this very objectively, even though I entered Capella 3 semesters ago. I still question my decision at various times and on both a conscious and sub-conscious level as well it seems. . .Capella’s acceptance rate is unacceptable. When US News and World Report has an N/A next to acceptance that has to make even a semi-intelligent person worry. Other universities that are B&M and have a heavy online following such as Regent University at least have their acceptance rate for the Ph.D. program at 60%. . .At any rate, look closely and choose wisely because Capella is convenient, but convenience alone cannot dictate and should not dictate your choice."
- August 13, 2007 - Leroy S. - "All are somewhat valid arguments. But keep in mind that Capella has a 100% acceptance rate. Thats why they are not respected. They accept anyone to a PhD program! Thats just bad. They are for-profit, thats why they accept."
- August 1, 2007- go where you want - "Do what you want, it doesn't matter. Somewhere, someone will hire you. Hell, with Capella, you can be the most educated man or woman at the Kwik Mart."
- July 5, 2007 - Just another Guy - "your comment about putting your Capella education against any Ivy Leaguer is spineless, first of all this is a public forum your name as well as all of ours is anonymous, so I strongly doubt that you would dare to publicly compare your Capella degree to that of any Ivy Leaguer.
Let me say your nutz in comparing your Capella education to an Ivy League education. First of all you couldn’t compare the top 15 public universities to schools like Penn, Princeton and Yale let alone Capella."
- June 6, 2007 - Disagree InfoSec - "Most online only schools and for-profit schools are viewed with negativity by most of the business world. IBM will no longer pay for its employee's education at schools that are not accredited by AACSB, that cuts all for profit online colleges from the menu. The most common negative factor plaguing online schools like U.Phoenix, Capella, Kennedy Western, Devry and Strayer is the fact that its just to easy to get into those schools graduate programs and many high paying firms want to know their interns, and new employees came from programs that are very selective."
- May 24, 2007 - Worthless - "I dare any MBA, MS or PHD from Capella to take their degree, thesis and resume to any world renowned university to seek employment, you will get laughed at by most of the faculty."
- April 30, 2007 - Adneg - "This is all very simple. Attending online universities such as Phoenix and Capella are only going to get you as far as the school's reputation can."

- March 27, 2007 - Just a Guy - "If I can prevent just one person from being ripped off by NCU, Capella, Walden or NCU, Then I have performed a valuable public service."
- April 4, 2007 - Daniel - "I have to agree with Just a guy. I am not saying that online degrees are bad, but the stigma of getting a degree from UOP, Capella etc.. is not very good. If I were going to get a masters degree via distance learning, and money was a factory, I would simply choose a good public school and go there."

- October 21, 2007 - "Attention online fools!" - "If you go to UoP you are stupid and it is as simple as that. You have no business working, teaching or anything else. Just so I have made not mistakes, this includes ALL online schools like ITT, DeVry, Capella, Jones University, etc."
- October 18, 2007 - "Being Honest" - "Capella, UOP, ITT, and any other for profit university is sub par and so are the students. No one should take anyone with a degree from these institutions seriously. Students in these schools are the worst of the best and the best of the worst (and maybe they are neither, they may just be the worst of the worst). I question whether these students should even be allowed breed for fear that their below average genes may be allowed to create another sub par human with below average intellect whom will either turn out to be a derelict or a garbage man."

Complaints about Capella on Online Degree Reviews pertaining to Walden University
The following information was first found on July 23, 2008 and contains some of very nasty remarks about Capella University, along with two other online schools - Walden University and the University of Phoenix. Unfortunately, it is impossible to link to individual posts and the thread is very, very long. Just the same, the negative comments about Capella and others are so vile, and numerous, that they are now being featured here. Equally disturbing is a the remarks of one of Capella's supporters who is a good example of the type of "student" that is attracted to Capella's programs. That individual appears to be posting under two (or more) names including, "I'm Jeff" and "Felix." We won't post his hate here but wanted to point them out, just the same.

- June 23, 2008 - Arguments -
" Schools like Walden, Capella, UoP, NCU, etc are causing our school system in the US to look like crap."
- June 17, 2008 - Jeff - "The bottom line is simple. Walden, Capella, NCU, and the other UoP clones are subpar schools that way over-charge for the level of education that they provide.
If you get your degree online from a traditional state supported school, you come away with a diploma that will cost you 30-50% less and command a far greater degree of respect. Avoid Walden, Capella, NCU, and UoP. You will be far better off in the long run."
- June 15, 2008 - Jeff - "Its fine to get your masters online, but get it from a school that has a good reputation. Walden, UoP, Capella, and NCU are looked upon as a last resort for those that could not qualify to get into a reputable graduate program."
- June 4, 2008 - Jeff - "Having worked for UoP...I agree with Hilarious. There are better programs offered by the traditional schools. The traditional schools almost all offer online versions of their degrees these days and they are almost all better and less expensive than UoP, Walden, Capella etc..."
- June 3, 2008 - Hilarious - "UoP, People in many industries and definately in Academia think UoP sucks...and they are correct in that assumption. . .You can defend UoP all you want but the school is not interested in their students education all they are interested in is more tuition money... For those of you looking for an online school... Here are four to avoid:
- Walden
- UoP
- Capella
- and NCU
Find a traditional state supported university that offers online programs...You will PAY LESS and GET A BETTER, MORE RESPECTED DEGREE."
- May 30, 2008 - Hilarious - "Go to traditional State supported Universities that have online programs, because UoP, Walden, Capella, and NCU are all crap."
- February 4, 2008 - So How - "Can you really be proud to go to a school that accepts everyone? On top of that, they have every reason to keep you in classes and make sure you pass. If you fail out, they lose money. They pay high dividends to stock holders and do not reinvest in the school like they should. The professors come from other for-profits like Capella, Phoenix, NCU, etc. Have you noticed most for-profits have their own little world? Each one will hire from the rest. But non-profits rarely hire from these graduates. Maybe it's "academic profiling", but its also common sense."
- December 19, 2007 - Just a Guy - "However, there are a large number of former students and professors that ARE calling Walden, Capella, NCU, and UoP a joke from an academic standpoint. . .Schools like Walden, Capella ot the other UoP clones. There are better/less expensive options in the state chartered universities."
- December 14, 2007 - Dr. B. - "I think you already know which one I would choose and why (Walden). The evidence is there. Capella has only been around since the late 1990s. ... I think this is a closed case. I have a colleague who refers to Capella as Acapella. lol"
- November 10, 2007 - Respondants - "Capella was a bit more organized, but nevertheless, the students they had in their Phd program were not very intelligent at all. I read over some of their work, and its amazing how they even got an MS. My fear in these schools really boils down to acadmic snobbery and fear I have. I don't want Phds from those schools being seen as my equal colleauges. Phoenix dissertations are horrible, students in the Phd I have met are dumb, and ITT's MBA is no different, along with Capella's Phd.
- October 31, 2007 - Respondants - ". . .Walden also has open admissions, so what happens to the students who don't make it? I can say Walden isn't known for passing students for sake of profit like Capella, Phoenix, and ITT though. But take into consideration those schools."
- October 29, 2007 - Me Too - "I am dean of a college at a well known university. I work a lot with other colleges and can assure you, none of us would hire a PhD (or doctorate of whatever) from Walden, Northcentral, Nova, Phoenix, Capella, or ANY for-profit in a professor position."
- October 11, 2007 - Respondants - ". . .I have taken courses at Phoenix, Capella, Nova, and NCU in PhD to compare them (about a years worth of each). The Phoenix, Capella, and Nova were not very good at all. They might have been BS or MS level if that. NCU however, was pretty good in some areas."
- April 27, 2007 - Tenured Business Professional - "I am a senior manager with approximately 25+ years of experience. When I decided to pursue my master's, I enrolled at Capella, with some of the same concerns that many of you have about the credibility and acceptance of institutions offering only online degrees.
. .I've done a great deal of reasearch and support the view that many students are better served by attending established campus-based universities that offer online and distance learning degrees (and many of the top schools now do so.) I now study online at Indiana Wesleyan University and am delighted with my choice."
- March 27, 2007 - Just a Guy -
". . . You can do better than Walden, NCU, Capella, Or UoP. . .The four schools [including Capella] I have listed above are interested in one thing. Seperating you from your money. You can do better."
- February 24, 2007 - Just a Guy
- "As the growth of online education continues I do not understand why anyone would even consider an online university that does not also have traditional on-campus programs. "Schools" such as Capella, Walden, NCU, Phoenix, and others are not well respected by academia or human resources professionals in business."
- October 26, 2006 - RL - "I am a Walden PhD student in the Psychology program and can not say enough good things about the school. The professors are great and knowledgable. (Having attended Capella and UoP, I can not say the same)."

Complaints and Comments about Capella University on Degree.net
- January 26, 2008 - "I am trying to find out whether a doctoral degree from an online program will really get someone licensed as a clinical psychologist. The two big players for this degree are Walden and Capella, and they are NOT forthcoming about their graduates' licensure success rates. They are also not forthcoming about other outcome data, which makes me nervous. B&M schools I have looked into appear to readily give this information up on their web sites, or provide it when asked."
- January 1, 2008 - ". . .I don't feel a Ph.D. from Capella is really worth while, especially since they lack APA certification."
- March 23, 2007 -"I am surprised that none of the major for-profits (UoP,Capella, or Devry) have really reported their graduate acceptance by corporations and academia, or have they? I would love to see a survey on this if it is available."
- October 17, 2006 - " Certainly the person at my work keeps bragging about the program [at Capella University]. But, truthfully, I am also a little concerned about any program that would enroll him."

Complaints & Comments about Capella University on Yahoo! Answers
- May 2008 (Refer to "Best Answer") - "I received my Masters from Walden in 2005 and it has been treated with nothing but mockery since. Capella University, Phoenix University, and Walden University are not looked up favorably by employers."
- April 2008 - Question: "Capella university master's program in counseling psychology...is it good? any feedback?" Best Answer: "No. It is an on-line school. Employers to not respect on-line schools.
It is a For Profit corporation. Employers do not repect degrees from For Profit Universities. They accept almost everyone who applies. Employers do not respect degrees from schools that have no selection criteria."
- February 2008 - Question: "Does anyone have any information on how good online PhD universities are?
Walden, Argosy, or Capella?" Answer: "I don't know what kind of a Ph.D. you are thinking of getting, but I can tell you that in the academic world, if you are thinking of becoming a professor, no self-respecting university would ever hire a Ph.D. from one of these, or frankly, any other online program. There is absolutely no equivalence to an in-person Ph.D. program. The faculty are generally completely unqualified to teach at that level. I would urge you to run before putting any money down on any such program."
- January 2008 - "Are
Walden University, Capella University, Kaplan University, University of Phoenix . . .any good?" The "Best Answer" states, "No.
These are all For Profit corporations that have no standards. They are much more expensive than respectable public universities. They will accept anyone. Since the average quality coming in is not very good, the average quality coming out is not very good. Employers will not respect a degree from these schools.
You would be better off getting a tattoo on your forehead that says "I have a bad education" -- it will send the same message, and cost a lot less."
- December 2007 - Question - "Is there any online course (MA, MS, PhD etc) in clinical psychology which is not very costly (walden / capella/ phoenix are 20000 $+)?" Answer (refer to first one listed after "best answer") - "Any online school you go to such as the ones you have listed are simply a waste of money and time. You might get your "degree" - but I can assure you that no one will take your degree seriously. I've said this before, but I know a guy who works for a consulting firm - most people there have advanced degrees in psychology. When he gets a resume with someone who has a degree from an online school he throws them in the trash. Thats right, its beyond not considering the applicant. THEIR RESUME GOES IN THE TRASH IF THEY WENT TO AN ONLINE SCHOOL."
- October 2007 - Question - "Legit online college/degree?" Best answer (Excerpt) - "You'll notice that there are a couple of prominent "known-for-online or not so great" universities that I don't have on my list (Shh... U of Phoenix. Devry. Strayer. Walden. Capella. AIU). That was on purpose. Not loving those. While some employers don't care, others (a lot) will actually refuse to hire you because you went there. Not recommended."
- August 2007 - Choosen as "Best Answer" - ". . .most of those online programs are not at all respected. Worse, he's considering Capella? Oy. Honestly, that's not going to help his career - in fact, it may hurt, as many employers refuse to look at resumes from schools like U Phoenix, Capella, Devry, ITT, Strayer, AIU, etc."
- July 2007 - "Is Capella University a good school?' Answer, "The online school Capella??? NO its an online school."
- July 2007 - "What do you think of the teacher degrees offered by for-profits [including Capella University]?" The "best answer" states, "If possible go to a real university. If you need to do the degree online there are real universities that offer online programs where you can do the whole degree online.
At least then you have a degree from a real university."
- July 2007 - "Capella university?
What are your thoughts about this university. Has anyone gained licensure after completing the counseling program?" Refer to first "other answer" which states, "Please don't bother with this program. It is unaccredit[ed] and will not get you a licensure in couseling."
- January 2007 - Question - "I read that people with education degrees from University of Phoenix, Capella, and Kaplan are dragging down the entire educational system in the United States. Is this true?" "Best Answer" - "They are very expensive and disdained by many. If possible go to a real university."

Complaints about Capella on Scout dot Com Forums
- November 15, 2007 (Third comment from the top) - "I went to Capella University for awhile, but I did not like it. I was taking Information Technology courses, but I found the courses to be nearly worthless. The work we had to do was easy, and did not challenge me. The instructors were not helpful, because they did not communicate with us very much, and when they did the responses were short and not helpful. I ended up learning on my own, which is kind of the point of online schooling, but I was worried that the classes did not challenge me enough. I thought that if I knew the courses were not challenging, then my potential employers may find out the courses were not challenging, and therefore would not believe I learned anything . . . The instructors, who were supposedly professionals in the areas they taught, rarely gave any insight on our discussions to further our learning. . . Remember that just because a school is accredited does not mean that its degree is taken seriously."

Complaints about Capella University on Minnesota Public Radio
- June 12, 2007 - ". . . pressures to make a profit troubled one former Capella employee. Christopher Tassava found the company pressured employees to keep the students paying. Capella admits nearly everyone who applies. Tassava, now working at Carleton College, often worried Capella's customers didn't fully understand what they were getting into financially.
"With Capella the impetus is always to keep the student making progress," Tassava said. "Often there wasn't a lot of progress discernible. Making progress often reduced to 'are you paying tuition or not? Are you taking out student loans?"

Comments and Complaints on Distance Learning Truth Forums
The following are rather enlightening:
- June 26, 2007 - "Capella and UOP are at best acceptable and as you point out the reputation is terrible. I really don't see the point to either one. TESC and Excelsior are easier and cheaper and they both run under the radar of public notice, for the most part. If the clowns getting the little three degrees would shut up and stop telling the world how easy they are and how fast the process is several of these fourth tier schools would be better thought of by the public, but you can't say it's cheap-fast-easy and then turn around and say "And oh yes, it's also very rigorous."
- June 26, 2007 - "If a school like Capella is useful to some people, fine, so be it, but it is not quality education or recognized as one of the better colleges in America. In fact Capella is one of the worst colleges in America, and yet Capella Rocks lists it on the resume as if it was Harvard, ok, I can live with his vanity-ego-mistakes. But you see he is not willing to allow other people to make less than excellent choices as to schools. If Capella, as bad as it is, is suitable for the RA or No Way crowd, then Breyer State may well meet the needs of others, perhaps even many."

Comments and Complaints on State University dot com
While this site is not the easiest to navigate, a couple of very interesting facts about Capella are noted:
- 2007 - (Look at the very bottom of the page that has been linked to) - "Capella is very good at helping people get enrolled. They are also great at helping their students get access to financial aid. They are not good at supporting their students once they are enrolled in their classes. Many of the classes are non-academic, and the University charges outrages "residency" fees to students and requires them to attend non-academic "seminars" in distant cities, which they cheerfully help their students borrow money from the government to pay for. Their director of financial aid has been indicted for receiving kick-backs from Student Loan Xpress. Capella is under investigation by OIG for Title IV violations. Capella is not a member of the BBB, but has numerous complaints on file there. Capella has withdrawn it's application for APA accreditation once it was made clear to them that there was no way they would receive even probationary acceptance by that organization."

Comments and Complaints on Teacher Focus Forums
- July 6, 2006 - "Watch out for the comps at Capella. The mentoring and advising are almost non-existent. It's very possible not to pass, and there's no re-enrollment. Many students in the Ph.D. program in Education are seeing their thousands of dollars in tuition money go down the drain, even after they’ve completed all of their coursework with a good grade point average."
- June 23, 2005 - "I enrolled at Capella a few years back and dropped out after the first week. I did not like the way the online classes were conducted. Way too controlling for my tastes. But some people like that -- which is obvious based on their good reputation and continued enrollment."

Complaints & Comments about Capella University made by Bloggers
- July 4, 2007 - A blogger wrote "Some College Faculty Members Have Questionable Credentials" and warned, "students should look at the credentials of a school's faculty before making a final decision to attend. In some cases they will find that the instructors and administrators are unqualified or only marginally qualified.
". . . The deans at the school's Greensboro (NC) and Morrow (GA) campuses list advance degrees from Capella University, a for-profit online school that is headquartered in Minneapolis. Capella lacks accreditation by AACSB and NASPAA; moreover, the school has been investigated by the U. S. Department of Education and the New York Attorney General's Office."
- March 25, 2007 - "But for an online university [such as Capella University], the bottom line is indeed the bottom line. In order to pull in as many students/customers as possible, they set their standards for students low - they will take anyone who is willing to pay. If you contact a representative - or are contacted by one - you often aren't speaking to a guidance counselor who has your best educational interests at heart, you are speaking to a salesperson who has to meet a quota and bring in as many paying customers as possible, or, like a telemarketer, they are promptly fired."
- February 20, 2007 - The following posts are some rather sad (they really are) stories posted on a blog called "Capella Pioneer?" They document Capella "learners" who have been unable to find work or internships because the Capella University, where they paid so much money to attend, withdrew their accreditation application with the American Psychological Association, rather than to appeal the APA's decision which turned them down.
- August 4, 2007 - Kimbra (who as noted elsewhere was denied certification in her home state because, the Tennessee Board of Examiners in Psychology found that, "It was the determination of the board that Capella University did not demonstrate that it was substantially equivalent to a doctoral psychology program approved by the APA or listed by the ASPPB."). Kimbra states, "You see, in the world of psychology, as a scholar-practitioner, not coming from an APA accredited school, which Capella/Harold Able School of Psychology is not, is a slow and painful death. I cannot get licensed in my state where I have lived for 17 years, and I am in the throes of searching for psychologist positions in other states that do not require APA in their requirements."
- October 10, 2007 - Calston responds to Kimbra stating, "I've had my fair share of bumps and bruises as well. At times I feel I've traded convenience for job security. Sure I was able to take care of my family and keep my job, but with good there comes some bad. I believe the risk of not obtaining licensure is the sacrifice (or equivocal struggle)."
- October 13, 2007 - Pat states, "I just recently graduated with a Masters of Science degree in Addiction Psychology from Capella/Harold Abel School of Psychology and I find myself attempting to blaze a trail in locating a position where I can obtain my clinical hours toward addiction certification or licensure plus looking for ways to make current addiction treatment facilities more accessible to the Deaf Community. Right now, I feel like I'm hitting a brick wall in both arenas."
- Undated - "I received my Masters from Walden in 2005 and it has been treated with nothing but mockery since. Capella University, Phoenix University, and Walden University are not looked up favorably by employers. Given the choice, I would not go back to Walden and wish that I had gone to a better school to begin with."
